View Full Version : Dehumidified water as top off

Just thought I would mention that I tested the water from my dehumidifier and it only came up with 14 TDS. I will have to check it again later as I did not clean out the collection bin when I set it up (new). There could have been some factory contamination in there.

Has anyone tested their dehumidifier water for copper or other bad stuff?

My dehumidifier also has a hepa filter on it for the inflow. I would think it could be used as top off as long as I keep the filter clean. Anyone try this? The humidity in our office is generally around 45% and outside is at least 60%. I am thinking free water.

I wouldn't try it. My dehumidifier has a moldy smell too it, even after a good cleaning. I'm not saying it won't work, but I definitely wouldn't try it in my reef tank.

If your using a good TDS meter & the TDS is 14.....Thats way too high to use.

I have a RO/DI unit and a COM-100 TDS meter, If the TDS reads 3.0 I wont use it. I look for a 0.0..0.3...0.5.

I know your thinking FREE WATER.........BUT thats going to lead to TANK CRASH.....And that will cost way more money.

I think my meter is accurate. Distilled gets me 0 and the water store that claims to be under 3 I get about 5ppm. I figured 14ppm could not be that bad. I only replace about 2 pints a day. I guess it is best to be safe than sorry. Just thought it seemed like a waste to dump the water.

It doesnt have to be a waste. Not sure if your married or not. But if you are, I'm sure you have plants ( a women thing ). That water is fine for plants, or the garden

This is in my office not at home. One reason I thought the dehumidified water would be good would be not having to carry it to the bathroom or have extra RO/DI buckets hidden under my desk for top off.

Yeah I am married but my wife can kill plants just looking at them. I do not think she was able to keep a cactus. LOL

I'm lucky......My wife has a green thumb. She has plants all over the house & a awesome garden.

Wait ( plants all over in my house ). Maybe thats not lucky........LOL....LOL

In any case, I wouldn't use that water..

OH YA...........when I was single.....I have killed fake plastic plants before.......Go figure that one out.....LOL

You have to ask yourself, would you drink it?

Sure, I do not see why not. Definitely cleaner than our city tap water at 250 TDS. :p Heck my tanks get RO/DI and I drink tap now.

Use an RO/DI and avoid problems. If you want, you could also use the RO (but not DI) water for drinking.
