Looking great!

The green stars love light and if you place them at the right level they will have a growth explosion. Mine nearly covered the rear wall of a 28 gallon within 6 months. When they get enough light they tighten up and get to an almost blinding green-awsome. Alot of people don't like them though because they grow so darn fast and can smother other sessile inverts quickly, but if you just keep them cropped they are fantastic.

Thanks guys. My camera's not good enough for a full tank shot. It really does not turn out well. I really had to play with the shots to get those. I'll try to post one. The green stars have the entire bottom to cover if they want.

I like the finnex. There's a few things I modified, like getting rid of there skimmer. Right now I have a 250w maristar hood with two 24" t-5's. All in all it's a pretty good tank. Would like to go bigger at some point and have a separate refugium.

Referring to the red turf stuff? If that is what it is get rid of it. It will spread like wildfire and nothing will grow on it. It can become a nightmare.

Smbiant: The maristar hood is built like a tank. It was given to me from a friend a few years ago.
zoadude: Why are you trying to scare the crap out of me:) I've been in reefkeeping for along time and I have never run into it before. It doesn't seem to be to aggressive but it has definitely spread. What can I do to ward it off?

I like it! It's such a simple aquascaping! Very nice! The maristar lighting is awesome! Do you have any fish in there? I didn't see any in the pics :)

Ahhh I see those little guys now haha!! Too cute! The little chromis blended in. I have one chromis too! He lost his other friends :(

Hi ssamick,

If the algae you are refering to is the red algae in the first pic, it looks like it may be centroceras algae. Do the areas look like they are actually tiny branches? If so then its most likely centroceras and it's calcerous. Long spine urchins eat calcerous algaes. Just a thought.

The algae looks almost like a small tuff, like when certain green algae start. Almost like the beginning of hair algae. I guess you can see single branches.

IMO it is most likely centroceras and it loves calcium. I had a small patch that grew out on some tonga rock. I fortunately was able to chip that section of the tonga off and had not seen any more after that. I initially thought it was pretty cool looking when it was small but then when it started spreading a bit I became a little concerned. I tried to find info on it and couldn't really find much out there. I was at a LFS and saw some similar looking patch on a piece of marshal island rock in a curing bin and the owner of the LFS told me it was harmless and he would just use long spine urchins if he noticed live rock arrivals with signs of the algae. I did not want any more organisms pulling calcium out other than the corals and coralline I already had in the tank so I got it out early. If you decide to try a long spine urchin they do a great job on all types of algae except some macros like bryopsis and caulerpa but do love coralline-the type we all strive for as well.

just another note about the long spine urchins are that they are reef safe but they will bother clams and zoas if they brush up against them and dont let them poke you with those suckers because although they are not venomous, the prills are barbed and if one breaks off in you skin-OUCH! very hard to dig out. They are machines at eating algae though!

I have two in my FOWLR tank and one small in my mixed reef. No regrets.
