Recirc mod on Euroreef RS250

Just wondering if I do the recirc mod on my ER RS250 can it be run externally. It has a GenX 6000 on it. Just trying to make the skimmer as effecient as possible before I put it in. Any opinions here, also what other stuff could I do. Does the gate valve mod really matter when I can control the feed input to the skimmer.
