View Full Version : Inverts Tolerance of Nitrates?

My nitrates are creeping up to almost 20ppm (I'm due for a scheduled PWC on Saturday) so my question is - how tolerant are inverts (feather dusters, shrimps, crabs, snails) to these rising nitrates?

I have read fish can tolerate 50ppm.

Thanks!

Depends on the inverts. Depending on the exact species, the ones you mention are probably nearly as tolerant as fish, IMO.
Still, you want to keep your nitrates a good bit lower than they are for the overall health of your tank. I'd encourage you to review your system's filtration, feeding schedule, partial water change schedule, skimmer performance, macro algae growth for nutrient export, etc. to see what can be improved.

Thanks for your comment Mariner ... the inverts I mentioned above along with 4 fish are everything I have in my 37-gallon. I do think I have been overfeeding.
