I've been looking to replace my 100g 72x18x18 due to severe scratches, but those dimensions aren't mass produced anymore as far as I know. I was thinking of just getting a custom tank, but shipping would be way too much.

So I came up with the idea of getting a 125, and using it just like a 100 by dropping the water level and make a canopy with 4-5" overhang. I'd be re-using my gl*******s overflow and just moving that lower as well.

Is there something I'm missing that would stop this from working?

Why not use the whole tank?

Because I want shallow dimensions... just personal preference

The only trouble I could see is if you were using an overflow for your sump. If you're sumpless or drilling then I don't see an issue aside from cleaning salt creep off the glass. Hell, It could help prevent jumpers.

It'll be drilled. I was also thinking of the waves I could make with that extra room

If it were me I would go Deep sand bed.

For that size tank, 4-6" dsb would be perfect !
