View Full Version : Eshopps overflow trouble
I'm in the process of putting together my overflow and playing with the plumbing. I can't get very far because the bulkhead keeps leaking. I'm assuming the gasket should go on the inside of the box. Should I add teflon tape?
Also, what's the best way to remove the last bit of bubble at the top of the U-tube?

I always use silicone as an added safeguard when adding bulkheads.

Not to hi-jack or anything, You just silicone the bulkhead in the outside box (drain side) from the start? The only reason I ask this is my eshopps overflow is to be delivered on thursday. As far as bubbles in the u-tube my understanding is airline tubing and suck the air out, is the flow through the tube not pushing the last bit of bubbles out?

Yes silicone it with reef safe silicone. And if there is an air line attachment on the u-tube you can hook a power head or a lifter pump to it and it will keep the air out of tube.

I have 1/2 a tube of aquarium silicone left over from building my sump so I'll use that. But Eshopps overflows (like lifereef) don't use lift pumps, correct? This will be my first time with a sump, so I don't any mishaps, or as little as possible. Thanks.

Nope, no lift pump. Just use an airline in the U-tube to get the water started.
Do you have a ball valve on your return? It doesn't matter if there are bubbles at first because you can get rid of them by opening the ball valve up a bit more. If you don't have a valve, it's harder to fix

It doesn't look like they have a place to put a PH or lift pump.

yes, gasket must be inside

The gasket always goes on the flange side... Not the nut side. Never over tighten or else it will press the gasket out. I rarely use silicone and there is no need to use a aqualift pump on a good u-tube over flow. Just keep the flow toward the higher side of their capability and look at the tube when ever doing maintenance or feeding to ensure there isn't a bubble forming at the top of the u-tube.
Thanks so much for all the replies!
What's the best place to position the airline for minimizing the bubble in the u-tube?
Now I just need to try to get the nut off. I have it on there super tight and the gasket is in the wrong place. *sigh*
I finally figured it all out! Everything is installed as it should be and I've managed to get the siphon going with no bubble in the U-tube.
Thanks for the help. Just one thing . . . more detailed instructions and parts list/description would be very helpful.
