I received my Eheim 1260 the other day and have a question on how you guys are setting up the intake part of the return pump. I saw on another forum to remove the cover and blue sponge and just put in a 3/4" 90 degree elbow. Are you guys doing the same thing or can suggest any other alternatives? Is that cover necessary?

My Eheim 1260 is submerged so no intake plumbing needed. Never any problems. I wouldnt put a elbow on the intake until you get good answers from some knowledgable people here and you are sure it wont ruin your warranty...Im no plumbing expert for sure but from reading here I understand this could cause restriction and maybe hurt your pump???

I found the info here (http://www.manhattanreefs.com/forum/diy-do-yourself/18869-plumbing-eheim-return-pump.html).

Any other suggestions? I know 3 of us are not the only ones using an Eheim as a return pump. Oh yea, forgot to add this is for the return pump submerged in the sump.

I just took the blue foam out and run it with just the plastic strainer cover to keep snails and macro from getting sucked up.

A plastic strainer like this (http://www.savko.com/PartList.asp?pgid=3&ptid=23&pid=33) ?

Just use the stock silver cover. Using the blue filter inside it is not necessary, but is fine as long as you keep it clean.

So you guys are using the cover. Are you guys also putting a fitting?

I run a 1262 and its been great! I keep it with the plastic guard and blue sponge filter, I don't see much of a reduction inflow. Its so far very reliable and quiet. I clean the blue sponge every 6 months. The only thing that gets stuck on it are the macroalgae that escape the sump baffles.

I decided to go bigger to reduce my pump needs. The pump runs a return from the refugium/sump to the 70G display with a Tee going going to a chiller, carbon filter inline the output of which is again going to a Tee to a UV and phosphate reactor and back into the sump.

I am just using the standart silver cover on mine, chucked the blue sponge away no other fittings added on to it.

As you can see I have 3 Eheim pumps in my sump, they are super quiet and very reliable.

I've got three of these, and I just use the silver grills (sometimes the blue foam filter, sometimes not). Don't run it without some sort of grill - you don't want something to get sucked into the intake and stuck.

I run my 1262s with the screens and the blue sponges. Works great.
I clean the sponges once a week tho.

i run my eheim 1262's submerged: one with a dual 90 degree elbow deal and the other with the silver grille on without the foam.

dont ask me why i did this...oh, and i dont see a difference in performance in either pump.
