Acrylic stand question

I currently have a stand that I'm not using (but intend to in the future so I don't want to get rid of it) and I was trying to decide if I could get away with building a 2x4 frame to keep the weight on the outside of the stand, then use it for a couple of 55 gallon tanks I have that I would like to move in to the fish room.

My idea is to frame along the outside edge of the stand, with a few cross braces along where the 55's would sit, set that on some insuating foam, then some 3/4" plywood (sealed of course)

I know it held a 300 gallon tank for 10 years, but the center seems sort of flimsy, does this sound like something I can get away with. It's big enough I don't really have another place to put it at the moment, and I'm trying to reclaim my living room for things like furniture instead of fish tanks.

its buried under junk at the moment, but this is the stand in question. I was always amazed it took the weight but never had a problem with it.

its true, I never throw anything away that might someday possibly could be used for something...

Its really hard to picture what your describing there....any pics,,,,

But it sounds like it would work....are you basically adding cross braces to theoretically split the stand in half or thirds due to the 55s not spreading the total length...

Yes, both length and width need to be supported, the top is only 1/4" acrylic.

LOL... its just going to be a turtle, and some african Cichlids.... even I can't screw those tanks up. Hopeing to tear the 180 down and give it to a friend so he can have his dang Oscars back...
