Hey, I am interested in getting some sps coral any idea on what to start with? What about montipora or staghorn?

Go with montipora, or acropora yongei (green slimer). Thats my .02. I would get a few different frags to start with, pretty soon you'll have a tank full of little sticks.

Okay, what about placement I have quad t5 lights 2 12,000 K daylights and 2 actinics about 6 inches from the tank top.

Acos should go high up under 4x t5ho. Montis will be ok mid to high.

Reefman. When you start replacing your T5's go to ATI Blue + bulbs a few at a time. They have great PAR and color. Quite a few SPS tank owners like them and are having good success (including me ! )

On a 30g reef as long as he has good individual reflectors he should be able to keep acros and montis anywhere in the tank.
