Okay, I purchased my 75 gallon reef aquarium for a fellow reefer 6 months ago. I have various lps, sps, and zoas in the tank. Growth doesn't seem to be to exciting except on two SPS frags that I have. I have recently added some acros that aren't doing so well and its only on the left side of the tank. I was told that the tank had 2 vho's and 2 metal halides SE at 400 watts. So I decided to change out the MH bulb on the left since the person I bought it from also gave me two extra bulbs. Well I noticed they were rated at 250 not 400. I looked on the ballast and it says 2x 250. So I guess my mh is only 250. My question is, is my problem the wattage and I should invest in a 400 watt model or can you properly grow acros in 250 watt mh system? If I should upgrade anyone have any recommendations for a MH setup that can be retrofitted in a hood? also it is currently SE not DE does that matter when considering upgrading?

2x250W MH should be more than enough light for whatever you want to keep. Depends on depth of water, but I'm sure in a 75 gal that's it not too deep.

I am all for lots of light, but there is no need for 2*400 over a 75. I have 2*250 (( plus 4*54 T5 actinics )) over my 75 and I have great growth.

There is more to getting growth then just lights, need to have the right amount of flow and make sure that your Cal, Alk and Mag levels are where they should be.

totally agree 400 is overkill on a 75
