I am building a 150G mixed reef tank (60" X 24" Footprint) and looking into what type of substarte to use. A few people have recommended Tropic Eden which comes in 3 different sizes (0.5mm, 2mm and 3.5mm) It seems to me that the sand sifting snails and gobies might have an issue with sand that is too large in granular size. But at the same time I will have a strong flow inside this tank and don't want a sand storm going on. Where is the happy median?

Looking for recommendations on size to use and amount to purchase. I have tried several different calculators and each one comes up with a different amount. I cannot find a calculator that allows me to enter the granular size of the sand.

Please recommend:
Brand of substrate?
Granular size of substrate?
Amount of substarte?

This is going to be totally up to your individual preferences -- do you want a super-flow SPS tank, or a low-flow softy tank?

Personally I find that a sugar-sized aragonite substrate in a dsb configuration keeps my alk + calcium levels totally stable for a low-calcium (softies + lps ) demanding tank, and also helps absorb phosphate keeping nuisance algae low.

However there is all kinds of debate around this issue, and plenty of articles, and also your individual preferences regarding this -- if you want super high flow, then sugar-sized aragonite is going to be a perpetual sandstorm.
