Hello everyone, I'm interested in possibly buying a UV sterilizer.

Are they efficient and effective?

What are the pros and cons?

And I would appreciate to hear your experience with them.

Thanks

I used a Turbo Twist 36watt on my 120 gal. but I never noticed a difference in the algae in the tank and I had some people tell me that it would help prevent ich in the tank. However my PBT still got ich, so I sold it and used the money on something else. This of course is just my experience some people swear by them though.

Anyone else? Some of the nicest tanks I've seen run UV. I'd like to hear from some of those folks. For example, is having a wiper important? What are the best brands and why?

I run a uv 24-7 and would not do without. MY tangs have far less ich and if there is an outbreak it is usually limited. I also think the water quality stays better. just my 2 cents

Thanks, Fancyfish.

Do they have ANY impact on coral health?

not sure it makes a difference. You will find as many pros as cons but in my experience over the last four years I would not do without

Hi L, Don't use one, but while the wiper has some convenience to it, I've read that the seal can leak. So if you go with one I'd go wiperless. IMHO :)

Agree anyone who disagrees hasn't done any reading on the issue.

I use one on my crowded African Cichlid tank. Even with the occasional torn fin or bitten scales, the fish seem to recover beautifully without all of the typical infections and problems. I think it definitely goes a long way but is not a cure all. It doesn't do much for my algae on the glass.
