Red Sea Reef Base maintenance

I just acquired an established (10 months old) 14 gal Oceanic Bio Cube, which has discolored, dirty looking Red Sea Reef Base (small, circular, manufactured sand). Should I use a gravel vacuum to clean it, or leave it alone and let "nature" run it's course?

pics would help how deep is the sand bed if it is over 3" in deep you need to be careful about mixing up the sand bed as it can release nitrates back into the tank. if the surface is dirty you can siphon it off
what does ti look like is brown or is red ?
