I am looking for a really really quiet pump for a return
It can be internal or external.
and I need about 700-800ish gph at 5 feet of head
It is to be a return pump.
Thanks for any suggestions.

Another is the Poseidon or Velocity externals. Dead silent. You plug it in, water starts moving and you literally dont hear a thing.

I have a eheim 1262 internal - dead silent. I also have a dart external - also dead silent

I would disagree with that. I would call the 1262 very quiet, not silent. Dart I would call fairly quiet. The Poseidon is touch it to see if it is running silent.

I run an eheim 1260...a bit less flow than the 1262, but very quiet...almost as quiet as you can find for an internal. It's also much less power hungry than a dart (don't have the data to back that up at hand though). I'd go for a 1262, or an ATB if funds are easy to come by.

My question is are internal pumps better then external pumps for return pumps?

+1 to this. I bought the PS4 based on SJM's recommendation, and I am VERY pleased with the noise.... or well lack there of.

The "touch it to see if it's running" isn't an exaggeration at all lol.

I have a dart and a barracuda and they are defenitly not dead quiet.
I will look into the poseidon.

Also what about energy use?
What is a low cost to run pump?

flowstar and red dragon are supposed to be pretty quiet and energy efficient, but pricey

All the Askoll based pumps are quiet. Red Dragon, ATB, MSX, or a regular Askoll. They are not all pricey.

Internal and externals both have their ups and downs.
Internal use space in sump, are simpler to install. They are always water cooled and will add heat.
Externals take up space in the stand, are more complex to install, are better for high head, can be water or air cooled. Externals have less maintenance since the impeller magnet is not wet and wont have calcium buildup.
