They are zoas (colonial sea anemones). Palythoas, protopalythoas, parazoanthus, protopalythoas and zoanthus are zoanthids and there are a few more though they rarely make it into the pet trade. Darth Mauls are palythoas.
An easy way to tell, though not 100% accurate, is that palythoas and protopalythoas will close up over foodstuffs, whereas zoatnus are filter feeders and will not close over feeds unless it is from irritation of the food particles.
Protopalythoas slime when touched and palythoas do not. Sand embedded into the tissues of wild colonies also is a way to tell the difference, but with the increase in tank raised zoanthids, this is not a reliable way to differentiate between the different types ina ll cases.

Think they are red and black. Vivid has them but I think they are really redwines that Vivid has. I got soem and the pics from others of thier DM are not what I bought from Vivid, but I have no complaints, theya re nice nonetheless.

I got my Darth Mauls from Vivid and they are sweet. They've been one of the easiest palys for me, being always open and multiplying. I've had them roughly six months now and they've gone from 4 to 20+. No room left on the frag plug any more. I need to take a new pic.
Judging from they way they accept target feeding, I'd say they're palys v. zoos. My gladly gobble mysis and brine.
Vivid DMs are really Red Wines? I'll have to check that out. I don't see Red Wines listed at CoralPedia. Anyone have a pic?

Thanks for the links 650. Mine looked very much like the classic Darth Maul when I got them but have morphed a bit under my 400w MH / T5 actinic lighting as the pic I posted of them a couple months ago showed. They resemble somewhat the winrib00 pic with the more solid color / quasi butterfly patch around the mouth.
I am getting set up to take pics now. I had to handle the DMs to get them into a better pic taking position, so they're puckered up at the moment. I'll try to get the pic up later today.

Not a great pic but it gets the point across. The ones in front were still upset with me for handling the plug. That's probably where my thumb was.

They are one of my favorite paly / zoo critters. :D
I intend to frag off a few and put them in my new lps tank. I wish to see what happens to their color under T5 only lighting.

They'll look nice, The ones I had looked good under 8T5s.

8 T5s! Right on. My lps tank has 6 48" bulbs, but it's only 12" deep. I am specifically curious about whether the "butterfly" of color around the mouth will dissipate and the "splatter" become more generalized. Interestingly, the average tentacle length has recently decreased somewhat from their previous "long haired" condition.

It's funny with polyps it's always different and a different tank.

I have had mine for close to a year now. Not the fastest growers for m, but otherwise no problems for me. They look kinda orange under 20 K halide, but are nice and red under t5's.
