I am thinking about helping out a fellow reefer by purchasing his 5-month old (purchased from Reef Specialty) ATB 1050A. I guess he must sell because the economy has taken its toll, so he is downgrading to the smaller skimmer. Will this skimmer still be under warranty? I don't have the cash to buy a new one right now but I would love to have a 1050A. When he first bought it, he had a problem with the pump and Victor from ATB made his day by giving him a new pump. As far as I know the skimmer is in perfect working condition. Its just a little scary to spend a lot of money and not have the support from the manufacturer or distributor, but I doubt thats the way it is. Please let me know. Thanks

Nevermind, unfortnuately this just fell through. I need a new skimmer badly and want to get one this week. I am trying to spend less than $700. Now I am seriously considering your Hurricone skimmers. What is the Cat 1 rated up to for a SPS with heavy bioload? Thanks.

I would rate the Cat 1 up to a 200gal SPS full stocked. I think we also have 1 more left of the Super Reef Octopus 50000 internal (http://www.reefspecialty.com/Protein-Skimmers-Super-Reef-Octopus/c21_103/p477/Super-Reef-Octopus-5000-Internal-Protein-Skimmer/product_info.html) which will handle up to 350-400 gallons for $499.

Which of the two would you prefer for a 180-gallon stocked sps tank?

I would choose the Super Reef 5000. It is a complete beast of a skimmer and will allow you room to expand. We do only have one left and don't plan to be able to get any more till October.

How is the noise level of that BubleBlaster compared to the Askoll in the CAT1 or CAT2

I'd stay with ATB. with Victor's service you'll never have to worry about any problems with your skimmer, Victor will take care of you.

About the same, both relatively silent. Either skimmer will work well with your system. The Bubble blaster is a great performing pump but rather new. The Askoll is a very popular pump that has been around for years.

An 840 with the large pinwheel will work fine.

The ATB 840 uses the Sicce pump and I woul prefer somethng with an Askoll pump. From what I have read ATB and WM have the best Sicce pumps, but they are still Sicce with some minor issues.

So with the askoll based hurricone, is the CAT 2 too much skiimer for a 180-gallon sps tank with 40-gallon sump? Would you recommend cat 1 or cat 2? Thanks
