overflow boxes

Does anyone cover the top of the inside overflow boxes on reef ready tanks. I get a ton of hair algae growth inside the box to the point that it starts to choke the strainer. I'm afraid covering will limit the air flow needed to drain properly.

I cover with netting material to keep critters out of the drain lines.
