I have a black and white clown (not sure if it's a true percula or ocellaris?) and I'd like to get a "regular" colored smaller clownfish to go with it. I do not expect them to breed, I just thought it would be nice to have a buddy. I've had the black and white for over a year but I have no idea which it is although I've done research. So, is there an easy way to tell and does it matter? Which would YOU buy to make a happy pair?
Thanks!!!

black and white = ocellaris from my understanding. so get an orange and white ocellaris and you should be good.

I started with a pair of perculas and purchased a black pair about a month later. All are small the black pair are a littler bigger than the percs. The pet shop thought the percs would claim 1/2 the tank and the black pair the other half; however, they are one big happy family. None of them go near the bubble amemone which is why I purchased the black pair in the first place.

Your Black & White clown is definitely not Perc. There is no such thing as a black and white perc. I'd buy a smaller regular Ocellaris. (assuming your B&W is a Ocellaris and not Saddleback) Pics would help.

This isn't a very good picture but it will have to do. I hope this helps. Also, there isn't any brown or other color around it's mouth.

It's a black oce. Working at a lfs for 5 years l noticed that 9 times out of 10 they were more aggressive than the normal orange ones. l don't know if others have observed this as well. Give it a shot and let us know how it goes.

So how do you tell the difference? I'd sure like to learn something here ; )

Yup its an Ocellaris. They are more aggressive (not that much) but pairing with a regular Ocellaris is pretty much as likely as with another Black O. Be sure to get one that's quite a bit smaller. Here's a couple pics of fish that can be called "Black Clowns" The differences are obvious. I hope this helps :)

I have a mixed pair of ocellaris (Orange and white female - black and white male) that do well together.

Thanks everybody! I'll make sure I get one that is much smaller.

orange ("regular") and black/onyx ocellaris mate without a problem. they're not picky when it comes to fish color. as long as they're both the same type. actually, I read pecula and ocellaris do mate too.
