View Full Version : Gluing a clam down

I received a 5" clam yesterday. It had one side of the bottom of its shell glued (looked like gel fragging glue) to a flat ceramic plate. The guy that gave it to me said only half the shell was glued so that the clam could still open and close, normally.

Has anyone heard of doing this? If so, is it an accepted practice? Seems like a practical idea, assuming it doesn't hurt the clam. Definitely keeps it in an upright position.

Thanks

I've never done it, nor have I heard of it being done Tom. What kind of clam is it?

That is a new one on me too... But if it is only on one side, it should not cause a problem. If it was me, I would be cutting off the ceramic tile

... What kind of clam is it? Crocea. The clam seems fine.

If it seems fine, it is fine- six weeks from now. I've owned them when their byssal threads have been trained on a disc; once they're attached, they bore in and rarely let go unless they have to.

But that's the point- if they need to move, they need to move. So the test will be in the days ahead as it acclimates to your tank.

... if they need to move, they need to move. That makes a lot of sense. I'm going to remove the glue.

clams are not meant to be glued down as far as i know.

like kfisc said, they move if they need to move.

i just put my clams on an oyster shell half, let them attach and move them where "I" want them to be. if they dont like it...then they will adjust their positions to where they will like it.

careful with scraping the glue off. if it isnt doing any harm, perhaps it might be a good thing to just leave it there.

I second that, clams should never be glues or wedged between rocks. They need the freedom to settle where they want so they become fat and happy!!

I second that. Let them move where they feel happy
