I have had a tank set up now for about 3 weeks. Tank has about 5 lbs live cured rock, and 30 pounds base rock.

I heard not running a skimmer in the begining would help speed up the diatom and algae outbreaks. Well I went through some diatom and GHA outbreaks, and now im getting hit with tons of corraline and the diatoms and GHA are going away. I am happy about that. Does anyone whose done this know when its good to add teh skimmer?

Thanks. Lou.

I have always added a skimmer day one...just me though, not that it actually begins skimming until nutrients are present. Depending on your bio-load, I would not want my system to begin suffering from high nutrients, slap that thing on and start skimming. Nutrient export of some sorts has to be employed, unless you have no fish, inverts, corals, etc... GL
