View Full Version : Adding a mini sump to an undrilled tank

I have a 15 hi tank set up as a mixed reef and I want to try my hand at a 2-5 gallon sump before (hopefully) I get into the bigger tanks.

The problem is, this tank isn't drilled and I REALLY don't wanna break it down to drill it out. I was thinking I could hook my pvc over the edge in back, then rely on a siphon for water going down and a pump going up, but with float level to run it. My thought is that if I use a float to shut off the pump if the tank's water gets too high the siphon will catch up and lower the tank's level. Then cut the off the siphon line pretty high up so that if the pump is too slow or dies it would never pull enough water to flood the sump before breaking the vacuum.

Any thoughts? Any problems? Any better ideas?
