View Full Version : is 4deg F too much temp flux between day and night?

I am attempting to do a 180gal without a chiller. But the house does not have ac ether. So the tank temperature swings from about 78.5F to about 82.5F by the time the lights turn off at the end of the day. I have thought about increasing the heaters so that the night time temps by 1 or 2 degs F just in hopes the high range does not go up too much more, and thus decrease the swing.

What do you guys think? Is a temperature swing of about 4deg okay? At what point do I need to start worrying that it is too much. My goals are to move the sps and other corals from my current 120gal soon.

That is what mine does in the summer and I have not had a problem for two years. Everything seems to be doing well. I have also wondered if it was too much.

although it's not ideal mine swings about 3 degrees in the summer as well I don't see any major problems.

That's normal and I wouldn't try to manipulate it unless it got outside of the 77 to 84 range. It's not uncommon for me to have a 4 or 5 degree temp swing in a day. My controller will shut down my lights at 84 and chiller kicks in at 85. That rarely happens, infact, I didn't even plug in the chiller this summer. I have one heater kicks on at 77 and the second one at 76. The controller acts as a failsafe on the heaters and shuts down the power to them when the temp reaches 80.

78.5F to about 82.5F
Any scuba diver will tell you that a 78-82 temp swing is about as natural as you can get. It might even be better than a constant temperature. I wouldn't be surprised if it was an important factor in coral health and someday it will probably be normal for high-tech reefs to have a day/night temp flux.

Mine usually fluctuated the same as everyone stated. 79-82. Once in awhile, during Summer it gets to 83, That's the highest it ever was.

I live in the hot, dry desert southwest.

Good luck! :-)
