VHO distance from water

Just wondering how high of the water most people keep ther VHO's-T-12 bulbs

The closer the better as you can that the water does not splash on the bulb I say 3 inches from water.
I can not have my VHO that close. I have a MH and VHO fixture and have it 8 inches from the water.

When I used only VHO, they were 4" from the water.

My VHO's sit on top of the eggcrate cover. I have to wipe the salt creep off every once in awhile, but it isn't too bad.
