Silly Question, But I'm still New to the game.
Do you replace your sand? I have a 180 , And Have a very thin sandbed.( Very Fine Grade sand ) . It's going on 2 yrs old. So Should I slowly Replace it or just add to what I have?

If you want to keep a shallow sand bed, then you should keep it at 1" or less.

calcium based sand picks up PO4 and binds it... slowly over time. I am getting ready to replace the sand when I do a tank change (same tank, but it has to be emptied to be drilled). If sand is full of PO4 you will have algae. If you do not have algae, I would not bother to replace it.

Hi arredondojason, What do mean coarse? 2mm,3mm,etc. If you had a product in mind, or brand let us know. Just wondering what you mean.
Thanks!!! :)

Just a small tip. When you go to replace the sand use a funnel and piece of flex tubing. In other words make a beer bong :D but instead of getting drunk, fill your tank up with nice new sand. Then rinse it out and throw a party like you were back in college lol.

You guys have been super helpful... One more Question.. What Grain ( MM ) do you think I should Go with, I have a Diamond goby who is a busy bee at times. ( and the Fine sand I have floats all over the place ) looks horible when he is going at it. Should I up the size a little?
