Yes, it can be deadly. Seriously.

Should read some of these articles compliments of a post in my rebuild thread from the Waterkeeper

And he knows his O3 by golly. :D

But so does Randy Holmes-Fraley and since he is such a fan has written
Ozone in the Reef Aquarium, Part ! (http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2006-03/rhf/index.php)
Ozone Part II (http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2006-04/rhf/index.php)
Ozone Part III (http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2006-05/rhf/index.php)
which covers it better than most books and saves me a ton of writing. ;)

Almost forgot- ORP in the Reef Aquarium (http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2003-12/rhf/feature/index.php)

With that being said I run ozone into a skimmer w/ no controller and have 0 residual O3 in the refugium where it goes into. I'm up to over 200 ORP in the main tank now that I just bumped up my ozone production. Also, have no airborn O3. Have tested for both and will continue to do so periodically. I test ORP just about daily along with temp and pH with a Hanna hand held probe.

Skimmers and systems that run ozone have a carbon filter to keep the ozone from returning to the tank (run the water through a bag of carbon) and or the air outside the tank (carbon filter at the top of the skimmer). To be on the safe side. I suspect many systems that run ozone dont have these safeguards and are just fine.

It is a strong oxidation agent. If breathed into the lungs in sufficient quantity, it can cause burns.

NOW, having said all that, most ozone generators we use in the hobby do not produce enough to become very dangerous in a ventilated area.

You can smell it. A little hard to describe. The strongest I have ever smelled it other than when using an ozone generator is during a BAD lightning storm when I worked in Northern New Mexico for the Boy Scouts. Lightning generates it.

Without a large O3 generator in an enclosed area, I wouldn't worry too much about it. If your fish room is a 4'X4' closed with a sealed door, I'd be concerned with standing in there with the door closed (no carbon filtration).

I would err on the side of caution without being obsessive about it. Treat it like gasoline. Safe if handled with appropriate precaution.

Hope that helps.....

It can be deadly if not set up properly. Research it thoroughly before proceeding.

Subscribed because this is something I am interested in learning more about. Thanks for the links Jason
