Just bought a H. Melanurus. About 3" long. Was eating flake food at the lfs. I put him in the QT tank about 15 minutes ago and he's looking a little stressed out trying "bury in sand". Basically going vertical trying to wriggle into the glass. I have a container of sand in there about 2" tall, 6 or 7" long and 4-5" wide. Guess I'm just nervous he won't go up high enough to get into it and he'll stress and die. QT tank is a 10g so it's not like the tank is so huge he can't find it.

How long did it take your wrasses to find their sand container in a bare bottom tank?

Hmmm, that sounds tough. Fish are hard like that sometimes. :) I would just be like, "Why doesn't he see it?! Come on, buddy. You can be happy if you just go up a little bit more into the sand. It's right there!" Ughhhh! LOL I talk to my fish like they're people. It's pretty weird but hey.....? lol

Back on topic, I just got a Melanurus wrasse a few days ago as well and he hasn't even come out of the sand yet except for a few minutes. Then he dove back in. BTW, isn't so neat to see them twist themselves under the sand like they do? Really neat!

Sorry I couldn't really help and sorry for the long post. I guess I just felt like being chatty. :)

lol I hear ya. I was telling him to swim up a little bit higher. He was swimming around the base of the container the last time I checked on him. My heart ached for him...just wanted to reach in and put that poor lil fish into the sand myself.

Here he is in the corner..snapped a couple photos. Not the best photos..lol, but here he is:

Here he is cruising around the base of the sand container.

well I can't find him ANYWHERE and he's to big to fit through the egg crate (I think) so he must be in the sand. Looks like it may have been disturbed a little bit :)

Hope he's recouping to come out and play tomorrow :)

Has it found the sand yet? I had to catch both of my wrasses and show them where the container of sand was. lol. They freaked out for like 2 seconds until they realized there was sand under them and dove right in!

Korrine, mine finally came out today!! Woohoo! It took three days but it was well worth the wait. I love this wrasse! The face on him is just stunning. I'll have to snap some pics of mine. I hope yours comes out soon too.

Nice looking melanarus!! I recently added a five line wrasse to my tank and I love it. It's similar in appearance to the melanarus.
