Hello, I set up a new tank about 5 weeks ago, just some snails, crabs, and a peppermint shrimp in there...I was not running the actinics to help control the algae blooms....but are the actinics needed to help the tank cycle?

you don't need lights during your cycle

When I cycle a new tank, I run everything the same as I do as if the tank were fully stocked. Although lighting is not needed for the water to cycle, I feel that the sudden introduction of light after a cycle can cause more unwanted algae than normally.
