Possible to count sump water up/down cycles?

Need a way to count how many times a pump empties a sump.
The pump is triggered by a float and empties the sump in a minute or so.
Is there any way to count how many times the pump comes on in a week?
( I can't tap into the float circuit unfortunately)

A pulse counter would do the trick, but it sounds like you may have some serious design flaws in your system. The sump should never run dry or even close to it.

I'm sorry for not being more specific. This is actually measuring the number of times the pump kicks on in our septic tank sump. We had a new field put in that isn't accepting all the water we put in and I need to prove that its the field and not us using too much water. Every time the pump comes on it pumps out 40g and so we are trying to show how many times it comes on. Sorry and thanks again!
