View Full Version : Where did the Ammonia come from???

i just walked into my study and saw my hammers melting and my shrooms clinching back this is a reef that has been going smoothly for 3 months and so i did the tests on all the perameters and low and behold my amomonia is at .5 ????


what the heck happened here?


only thing i did yesterday was change out my filter socks and feed the fish in the tank!

Too much fish food or a dead animal in your tank can cause ammonia to spike. The level of ammonia in your tank, 0.5 ppm, can be lethal to many animals (fish). Randy recommends taking immediate action when the ammonia level reaches 0.5 ppm. LFS sell products to remove the ammonia.

i did, i had some amquel and dosed the tank!!!

tested it and no ammonia now.

Another thought would be if you added something to your tank that killed the bacterial population.

I'd guess something large died, or someone dumped a large chunk of food into the system. Hard to be sure, though.
