I am running a 40 breeder display with an oceanic sump that i put baffles in for a sump, about 20 gallons of water in there. I am using a Mag 9.5 return pump. Is this too much flow for my sump? I had the pump already so thats why i used it, but now im wondering if i shouldnt slow down the flow thru the sump and use somthing like a Mag 5 or somthing?

I am having some problems with stuff floating around in the tank and wondering if i just have too much flow thru the sump to let it have a chance to settle. What are the pros/cons to having that much flow thru a sump?

You could keep the pump since you already have it and tee off back into the sump. Then if you ever get a reactor you can use that to feed the reactor.

I'm running pretty much the same system. A 40 breeder, 29gl sump, and Mag 9.5 return. I did as nanojg suggested. I put a T in the line with a ball valve to reduce the flow. Works fine.

That will work, but the T diverted sump flow is a waste of electricity. A more efficient method is using the right sized pump to begin with.

Yeah I agree. We need to be more careful with our energy consumption. Plus less money on electric means more money for coral :)

I think i might try a Mag 5 and see if that works

I think the Mag5 is a good match. Another you can look at with similar flow and price is the Maxijet 1800.

I have a mag 7 I'll be putting in a 29G sump for a 40 Breeder tank. It was suggested to me by gl*******s whom I bought the overflow from. Still working on it so can't give practicle information

Mag7s can be very noisy pumps.

i am running a mag 9.5 on a 50 (36x18x18) and it is a little to much. i have 4 1" drains in a CTC overflow, but i still had to slow the flow through the sump with a ball valve on the drain end. i was getting a TON of micro bubbles in the DT before that. i am tee-ing it off tomorrow as suggested above.

I'll let you know how the mag 3 works out on my 40.

Instead of T'ing it off, use a ball valve to throttle back the flow.
