"Wet" or "Dry" refers to the amount of water in the skimmate (discharge from the skimmer). Wet skimmate contains more water and is lighter in color; dry skimmate is darker, thicker and can be almost sludge like. Wet arguably pulls a little more crud out of the water, but you have to empty your collection cup or container more frequently and if you use a auto top off system you have to keep an eye on your salinity levels because if you replace the skimmate (which contains salts) with fresh water your salinity levels will decrease over time.

Some people also like to skim wet after the do a scrubbing of their glass to try and get as much of that, now free floating, algae skimmed off.
