View Full Version : Clear vinyl tubing
I was looking at using clear vinyl tubing form homedepot instead of the green Eheim tubing. Just wondering if it is safe to use. Will it release any chemicals?

I agree. As long as the runs are short and there's not too much pressure, vinyl should be fine. I'd replace it fairly regularly, though. Maybe once a year or every other year, depending on various factors.

I use the vinyl tubing. But I do replace it yearly like suggested above.

One other thing you may want to consider is whether or not the tubing will be exposed to light. I used the clear tubing in my sump area and with the exposure to my fuge light it quickly started to get algea. I got some black wire loom covering from the auto parts store and it solved my problem. If it will be used in any area of light I would suggest using a colored tubing.

Exposure to an ozone reactor may make it brittle over time, and vinyl will have a tendency to stretch out, so where it connects using nipple connectors you might wind up having the tubing slide off if it gets sufficiently stretched out and it isn't clamped down...
Just some things off the top of my head...
