We knew this guy was in hiding somewhere.... We would see glimpses of him, but we never imagined he was this big ! ...although, come to think of it, it does explain the mysterious disappearance of several LARGE fish !

Meet Karl. The Abominable Snow Crab :eek1:

He's furry. Yup, FURRY ! Although it looks like spike because he out of the water, he's actually covered in white fur.

We've found him a new home in my sump.

Thats pretty sweet you should see how big he/she will get. Go on you tube under Mr. firemouth and check out his crab brutus it's huge! You should deffinatlly keep us updated. I just found one that was snow white with black claws and I put him in the fuge. I did this about two weeks ago and havn't seen him since. I would have never know it was in the display but we just bought a house and I had to break down the tank to move it.

Pouk, are you still up for TOTM nominations?

Neat crab btw, what kind is that? A giant acro crab? We had one similiar to that, it was about the size of a dime and looked like pavona polyps (he was hiding in the pavona)...until i siphoned him out during routine cleaning. I still feel bad, he was pretty cool :(

PoukieBear
10/05/2009, 01:17 PM
I have no idea if I'm still up for TOTM. I don't think they tell you unless you've won ! lol.

I have no idea what kind of crab it is, other than a big bad hairy one. I doubt it's an acro crab, they don't get that big.

It's a Gorilla crab. They are mean little bastards. Hence the name Gorilla crab. They will eat just about anything and everything. You for sure want to get rid of it..

I have a few gorillas in my sump. They generally work their way down to a single one in tighter quarters, but they will eat just about anything that can fit in their mouth. I still have a couple in the DT, but they are so small and don't seem to bother much yet. Very easy to trap though. That one is pretty sweet though. Would def keep it...just in the sump is all.

gorilla crabs are nasty little things. I spent a year cleaning out my previous tank of Gorilla's and red rock crabs. Lost a lot of other inverts cause of these guys as well as fish too.

Jeez Michelle! Nice snag. I have a hitch hiker xanthid in my tank. I saw a molt a few weeks ago but have no idea where it's hiding out. I've had a bunch of snails deaths recently too.

I had one as well, but mine wasnt furry. He took out a yellow tang, chromis, anthias.

Here was my guy. Took me over 3 years to get him out, along with his 5 other friends.

I had a 4"-5" gorilla crab go after my hand when I was opening up boxes from a shipment of TBS live rock as I was pulling the large rocks out to put them in the tank. Luckily I caught that badboy before he got in the tank and made some major damage.

One of my buddies was catching lobsters in the mangrove in florida and stuck his hand up in a mangrove root system. He couldn't catch it and when he looked up in the roots he saw a stone crab up there.... that is a very good way to lose a finger

Wow close!

I saw a video of a guy who caught snapping turtles by standing on top of them in the water/mud, feel around the shell with his hands until he finds the head and holds his mouth closed without (presumably) being bit. :hmm5:

Btw, hows this for a hitchhiker?

Do you guys think these would be reef safe?

Horseshoe crabs technically are reef safe, although they get very large, need a large amount of sand area, and are likely to starve. Not a good choice.

Blue crabs I wouldn't put into a reef.

I was kidding, TP -- the horseshoe crab and the blue crab were both the size of dinner plates.

That crab in the OP kinda looks like a teddy bear crab. They are considered to be reef safe and eat detritus.

I'd look into it.

If your talking about the hairy crab the author, they are NOT reef safe.

If your talking about the hairy crab the author, they are NOT reef safe.

By this statement are you saying that a teddy bear crab is not reef safe? Everything that I see about them says that they are.

However, if you are still talking about gorilla crabs than I agree.

I was referring to the teddy bear crab which looks just like the crab in the original post.

I thought you might be, but you never know. Sarcasm usually doesn't come across well on a forum.

And if the blue crab was the size of a dinner plate, he should have been on one shortly.

The color doesn't match the Gorilla, course he is out of the water. Might be a Teddy bear crab check it out.

PoukieBear
10/07/2009, 02:41 PM
He's not a teddybear crab, and we already know that he's not reefsafe, since he's eaten a few good meals of expensive fish.

I finally caught a gorilla crab that was menacing my tank that was much larger than yours (fist size). I put a silverside in the sand & when he came out to dig it up I grabbed him with pincers. I don’t have the heart to just kill him yet so he is languishing in a salt bucket for now….
