So my LFS doesnt have any mated clownfish, but i remember reading here along time ago that if you get two clownfish when they are young, they are both males, and overtime one of them will turn into a female, and you got a pair. Female being the bigger one. So now my question how small do the clownfish have to be, so that you know that their sex isnt written in stone yet. Because my LFS has some clownfish of different sizes, but i dont know how small i have to go to make sure that their sex hasn't done that final change.

A size comparison would be nice, like the size of a quarter or something.

Im going to go to the lfs, and try to pick two little clownfish that are less than an inch. Hopefully that will get it.

i am looking at indiv. black clowns- what is the time frame on them breeding? has anybody had success ? if so what is the structure they spawn on?

Individual black clowns can never breed- it takes a pair :p

there are many species of Amphiprion that can be colored black. Success varies with species.

The structure breeding clowns spawn on is usually a solid object (ie:tile or rock).

I purchased my two A. Ocellaris as juveniles and both were about 1" in length. Just this past March I noticed they started spawning, so it took them about 1.5 years to decide who became the female. I'd say the male has grown to about 2" and the female just under 3".

If for whatever reason I lose my male, I would be inclined to find myself a b&w ocellaris or perc in the 1" range.
