Is a chiller needed on a 28g Nano-Cube HQI Aquarium? It will be in a room with air conditioning if that matters. If a chiller is needed with the HQI model, what about with the new 28g quad CF bulb model?

What's the temp in the room/house. You can get away with no chiller, or just an additional fan or two, depending on the temp inside the house.

I run an Azoo Quad fan over my rear compartment. I have it on a timer. I do however need to pay attention to the temp in my home, but as long as I do that I am good to go. You do however have to have an ATO and have your dosing dailed in well to run without a chiller in my opinion due to high evap. Tis' working well for me.

I lifted my hood off mine a bit with some legs and put an azoo fan on my sump and my temp stays low

I was rather concerned with this as well, so I bought a 1/10hp pacific coast chiller from the used forums... turns out because I tend to keep my house at 68F I will never need it :) So if you end up needing one cheap let me know LMAO!

Seriously if your house temp is low 70's you shouldn't need one.

Holy smokes. 68? Wow. If you ran your house here in FL @ 68, it would cost you $1,500 just in electricity.

Sweet, I actually keep my house at 68F too. (I live in the northeast) Thanks for the input guys. I'm going to try with no fans and if that doesn't work I'll add a fan or two.

Let us know how it goes. With temp in your house of 68 (assuming it's not 10* outside), you will be fine. Many northeastern/wester users often get an extra heater, in case their's fails, or to provide additional heating, as it can get very cold, depending on where you are.

i did the same, used a rkl to monitor temps. hottest it got this summer with out AC was 84.3 degrees with Metal halides on from 3-11pm. evap is a pita. i found that while ur ac is on(house temp was around 70-75), and ur hood is propped up, tank never really got that hot. tops 81.8 degrees.

It isn't anywhere NEAR $1500. At most, 1/3 of that. Usually 350-450.

Not bad. Guess power where I'm at is rather expensive. Need to get a solar system going.

We pay $300 a month to keep it at 76* with a 1400sqft house. JUST bought a $4,000 "high-efficiency" A/C unit. Lots of updating done to the house as well.

A fan blowing accross the water will work, However you will have a lot of water evaporation. You need to keep up with the water top off or the salinity will raise.

A chiller will keep the water really consistent, but you will have the cost of the chiller as well as the electric.

I have had a chiller on all of my large tanks for years. I just added a chiller to my office BioCube last summer. Personaly.......I like the chiller & wouldn't go back.
