It would be boring. What would you put in it?

I don't think it would be boring. You could have a great biotope tank, with mangroves, and some intertidal species, maybe even try and manufacture the submerged section to look like a tidal pool.

I'm sure that there are ways to make this work really well.

It would be difficult to make the sand stay in a slope, it would be interesting to have a shallows / tidepool tank though.

They have something similar to that at the Oregon Coast Aquarium, but minus the sand. It is basically a tidepool with massive ebb and surge. I think sand would be a major problem, but you could maybe do it with crushed coral or something a bit larger. There might be a way to tweak the cycle so that if you did have sand, you could have a surge or something that would push it back up the beach once a day. Easier to just go to the beach.

Anything that would inhabit the sand would level it in short time.

Check this out. I'm not good with the linking of links.
