Hi, I am a new user of this site and im gunna try out my first thread...

I recently ordered a 30" Metal Halide system with actinics and lunar leds built in from Odyssea products... I have heard mixed reviews a few of which involve the old style magnetic ballast melting and possibly catching fire. The one i ordered has a new style electronic ballast.

Does anyone have experience with this company.

Also I have heard talk of making these lights preform twice as well by changing the MH ballast to an icecap, I am new to the metal halide world, does anyone have any info on this, suggestions, and where you can buy icecap ballasts?? Thanks for the help!

I bought the same lights on 9/17/2009. The original ballast give out on 10/17/2009. I just send them an e-mail today. I fund out that they warranty is only 30 days. Let see what happens. I'm buying icecap from aquacave.com tomorrow. They in Chicago suburbs so I can pick them up.

My friend is using the same set up on his tank. He changed his ballast to.

Do a search for Odyssea and read some of the threads. I have heard mostly good stuff and I just ordered two of the $99 MH/T-5 fixtures.

or else? :spin1:

Your house might burn down! Is that a good enough reason? Keep in mind, this is the NEW T5 ballast from odyssea. I know, not quite a review on the MH/T5 combo but you get the picture about its quality... Good luck!

I might get bashed for this BUT :), Mine experience has been great. The bulb is worth complaining about and you need the 20K to get a brilliant 12K look, but unless you pay thousands for the in fad "best brand" fixture (IMO ridiculous) you will want to replace the bulbs. My odyssea ballast was great. It never got past room temp. I bought an ice cap ballast because of everything I read claiming how much difference i would see in a new ballast. The results aren't worth mentioning. There was the slightest difference in brightness and the ice cap ballast gets MUCH hotter! The fan is a beast. I would purchase from odyssea again if needed. As far as fires, you can google all day long and you will not find one person stating THEIR OWN fixture/ ballast caught fire. And with the metal powder coating/ and cool running ballast I find it even harder to believe. I have seen first hand that their customer service has lots of room for improvement.

I'm sure that there are quite of them that are running just fine. All I am saying is that having ballasts burning up and possibly starting a fire is NOT okay! If you clicked on the link above you would have seen the example. I'll just post it up for the heck of it! Okay so its NOT mine... but follow the links and you'll see the original reef who bought it 1 month ago!

Cliff Note: Fellow reefer bought the 48" T5 Odyssea fixture 1 month ago, and now both ballasts are dead (see pictures)

Looks like the "FIRE HAZARDS" are still not completely resolved with these Odyssea fixtures. Its cheap, and I'm sure they are good for the money, but buyer beware! You have been warned!

I am loving my MHs, but as for the 15" 14w T5s, I could do without. I can't find a replacement bulb for the small T5, so I am ordering 4x36" T5 retro and I'm gonna build a canopy. My corals are growing like mad.
