500 watts ? yes that is certainly alot . to much ? well its borderline . the softies you have really dont require intense light but if you had sps corals then you may want that much light and that is also alot for them .

jeez 500 watts!? you gota be careful with odyessea light fixtures..there have been many horror stories about these light fixtures catching on fire due to their internal ballasts..if you are gona ice cap ballast swap it i'd go for it.. 2x150s or 2x175s are plenty enough for a 50..

I have not seen a single one catching fire, just lots of hype on them. I have one, ran it for months, not a single issue, underpowered? yes but it worked as if I had a 150Wx2 over the tank. I also have one 37G with the older 175W/DE and has not burned anything to the ground.
I think is just an affordable easy to upgrade fixture, the guy who runs the business told me they are made by the same factory as Coralife in China, just a few different cosmetics and ballast of course due to trade mark, patent or whatever issues.

The so called "New Electronic Version" puts out about 165W each so would be "like" a 150Wx2, there's a thread also on how to make the ballasts put out more juice.
The original ballasts I used them to modify couple hoods, one for a 150W Biocube 29 and was great.
I think you could keep a clam no problem, I'm not a clam expert but I'd say yes.
Before you take anyone's word check the forums and make the best choice but also think of future upgrades.
