Ok, this is kinda strange, but I think there's a good chance this is the appropriate forum.
Is there any reef-related calibration fluid or test kit fluid that doesn't evaporate easily when exposed to air for long periods of time? What leads me to this question is this:
After moving to our new house, I boxed up everything fish-related and stored it in our basement. At least a couple months ago, I noticed some liquid on top of the plastic boxes where I store my old dosing supplements (dry Ca, Alk) in ziplock bags, as well as my PinPoint refractometer fluid.
A small amount of the liquid is also inside the drawer that houses the dry supplements, although the inside of the sealed ziploc bag containing the PinPoint fluid is dry.
I had been wondering for a while why this "spill" from the move wasn't evaporating, and then I suspected a water leak from the ceiling above. Didn't notice any water stains, so I moved the boxes to a shelf elsewhere, and waited for the liquid to evaporate. It didn't. The day before yesterday, I put a water bottle cap with a large drop of water inside next to the boxes. As of today, that water is almost evaporated. The other stuff isn't!
It's not silver like mercury, and the only thermometer I have nearby is not broken.
Just a little weirded out by this. Anyone have suggestions? Sorry if this question doesn't belong in this forum.
