My float switch from Aquahub suddenly quit working after 6 months. The upsetting part is 5G of water flooded my carpet. I used 1 single float as an external switch for my AC Jr so I didn't have a back up.

I moved the float switch a little close to my return pump, which was abt 2 inch away, so I'm not sure if the magnetic field from the pump has anyting to do with it. Now the float can't complete a closed circuit.

Is there any better float switches than Aquahub's out there? And reasonably priced? If not, I'll buy 2 switches from Aquahub again to replace and also figure out a way to make backup switch. Thanks all.

I use these with no failures so far, about 1-2 years (knock on wood)...

They have plugs on the end of the 6' cables which I really like; it makes replacing (if I ever need to) a breeze.

Thanks but does it really worth $19.99? I guess it is since no failures after couple of years. It looks like the same one at Aquahub though. I think I'll stick with Aquahub for 2 new float switches...total including shipping is around $22. Thank you nevertheless.

Several of my fellow local reefkeepers swear by switches from AutoTopOff.com (http://autotopoff.com)

I use these myself. Have had them running for over a year with no problems. Look on the Misc. page of their site for the upper or lower float switch configuration that will work best for you (lower has slosh guard & provisions for snail guard for an extra dollar).

Of the type of switches being discussed, I would say that the Madison M8000 is generally considered the best of the bunch. You can get it at autotoppoff.com, graingers.com , drillspot.com, etc. They run around $10-$11.

I've been using the one from autotopoff.com for about 18 months now and the only failure i had was due to my error. The switch became so badly covered in scale (I had it sitting right next to my kalkwasser output) that it locked up in the on position. I was actually surprised that it didn't lock up sooner as it was pretty bad. Thankfully i had a failsafe switch and my AC3 programmed for other precautions. Anyways, i would still highly recommend it. Just like with anything else this needs to part of your regular maintenance program. I just soaked it in a diluted solution of water/muriatic acid for about 30 minutes and it looks brand new.
