Learned from RC ID, that I have pineapple sponges. Started with 1 then 4 then 12, now in the last 5 days there are 100's on back glass/overflow/refugium.

Was told they are benficial filter feeders. Can anyway confirm and shed light on what to do about these?

Anyway to get rid of them?

Is this a new tank?

I wouldn't worry about them at all, their population has always balanced out in my tanks.

in a new tank this is expected and generally heralds the end of diatom problems as sponges use silicates just as diatoms do. If this is not a new tank I would question if excess silicates are getting into the water. They are harmless filter feeders though.

Yes tank is 8 weeks old.

Had the 1st one show within 3 weeks, just did not want a sponge nightmare.

Thanks

Over the years, I have population explosions of pods, snails, sponges and other critters. I've found that over time, the populations even out as they outgrow their individual food supplies. I'd recommend patience. Most likely, the population will dwindle until a stable situation is reached. The advice regarding checking for an excess of a nutrient in the water is also very good.
