I recently ordered a gold maxima from Liveaquaria and it looks purple with blue lines instead. I have a 250-watt 14000K MH 4" from the suface of the water and the tank is only 9" deep (from the water level to the sand). Is this to be expected or did they send the wrong clam?

Am I reading this right: I have a 250-watt 14000K MH 4" from the surface of the water and the tank is only 9" deep (from the water level to the sand). Is this to be expected or did they send the wrong clam?

what angle are you looking at the clam? my ultra blue looks purple when viewed from the side, but when you view from top down it is a really bright sky blue.

I will take a picture tomorrow. Yep you read that right, I have a 250-watt MH on a 14-gal BC. From all angles is looks the same. It does have a couple specs of gold but you have to look really close. That was not even close to the picture on Liveaquaria. I understand it would be a little different, but for it not to even be gold seems like I might have gotten the wrong clam. What do kelvin rating do you guys have over your gold clams? I would not expect 14000 K to be that much of a difference.

It sounds like the clam I have. I see people just call it "Stripe Blue Maxima Clam" Or something along that line. Purple with blue striples right?

doesn't sound right to me...but then again it was it WYSWYG? or just the gold maxima sale they have now?

Clams look different when viewed from the side vs the top. A pic would be great tho.

That is exactly what it looks like. Purple with blue stripes with a couple gold specs (about 1 mm in diameter).

This clam looks the same from all angles. It was just the regular sale not the WYSIWYG items. I guess if I wanted the gold I would have to spend the extra $40 for the WYSIWYG. I was not expecting it to look exactly like their picture but at least have more gold color than the 4 specs.

Was it at least gold color?

Due to so many color & lighting variables, the only way to get a clam specimen that will look the way expected is to buy a WYSWYG clam (i.e. Calms Direct, DDs, etc.) or from local observable stock, and to light with same or very similar illumination.

For further clarification, suggest you contact LA and maybe email them a photo of clam you received. At least you will find out if they call your clam a "gold maxima" or if they sent you the wrong clam. Good luck!

Well, I sent them a message that I know the clam will not match the picture shown but when you order a "gold" something it should at least be gold, yellow, or tan. Otherwise it should be just labeled as Tridacna Maxima.

Here is the clam I got.

Wow - that is definitely a bait and switch. I still love tridacnids - regardless of color - so I hope you don't take my post as "dissing" your clam or anything. But it sure doesn't look like it has any gold in it. Although my lfs tends to sell golds cheaper than the "blues". Did LA say anything to you about sending it back?

Moliken - A bit? LOL That is night and day difference. I can live with that. At least you can say it has gold/yellow/beige in it.

Phil519 - I try to follow the reasonable man rule. Would a reasonable man say that the clam I got is a Gold? That is why I posted to see what everyone says.

I just talked to one of their reps. She asked me to email them a picture so I sent the above picture. So I will see what they say.

You are not dis'ing the clam. It is just not what I had ordered. I like clams and if they want me to send it back would consider paying for it (as long as it is a reasonable price). I do not think I would want to put the clam through a second shipping (nor do I want to hassle with it).

I ordered a green maxima from Aquacon and it looks bright blue. When I talked to them they stated they keep it under 6500k lights and that my 14000k would make the green look blue. While I am not entirely satisfied with their explanation I still like the clam so did not contest the issue. Although I considered plugging in a 6500k bulb just to see. Oh yeah that and in about a day it had scooted across my sandbed, dug down to the rock and attached itself. :p

Tadashi if your looking for a gold at a pretty good price try looking up LAReefs on ebay. I have purchased 2 maximas and a crocea and they look pretty much like the pictures they had on the listing. tomorrow three more clams are due to arrive from them.

give them a shot and see what you think.

I wil have to keep that in mind next time I get a clam. I ordered these clams with other items not specifically just for the clams.

Tadashi,
What you got is what most people consider a Blue Maxima, not a Gold Maxima. Clam patterns and color varies a lot. Beautiful or not is personal opinion. However, it is a blue, not gold maxima. FWIW, a blue Maxima is less common than a gold Maxima.

Orion - Yeah I pretty much thought it was a low grade blue maxima because I have two blue maximas that are really bright and dark blues of various patterns. I wanted the gold for the diversity of color. I will probably try LA Reefs.

Liveaquaria - gave me credit for the clam and S&H and I got to keep the clam. Just not sure what I will get since they say they are out of stock.

What is LA Reef's merchant number? I cannot seem to pull them up. Are they the same as the www.lareefs.com? If so they must have sold out on their stock (Bubba cleaned them out). LOL

I know maximas. Are squamosa, deresas, and croceas care the same? Are they pickier?
