They are actually pretty quiet. My main issue was that the units are easily seized up by a few grains of sand. I used one on a 12" high tank, so it was a constant issue anytime I moved anything in the tank and the substrate was disturbed.

i have two on my 180 cube for 3 years now. one seized up after about 2 years and cleaned it and it worked fine. then it started to make a ticking noise and i had to replace one of the magnets. i will say that OM customer service is awesome. paul at OM sat on the phone with me for about an hour telling me how to take the device apart, reinstall the new part and put it all back together. i havent had a problem since.

one of the cons for me is the fact i have to drill the tank... otherwise i think it would be nice to have.

What do you mean? Can't it be installed into a closed loop? That's what I was thinking to use it for.

What is the procedure for replacing the magnets? I agree that Paul is super nice and will anser the phone just about anytime, even when he is on the golf course  . IF I put my hand on it while it is running, I can feel it "tick" a little, but not much.

I just installed one on 125 build, and I have only run it in FW and ii is quiet. I bought it used and I expect to have some issue with it. I should have SW and sand in my tank within a week or two.

Here are some pics of how I have it installed.

the way you setup the union to be far from the ball valve, wouldn't that cause more water to spill out when you disconnect the union compared to if you moved the ball valve down to right above the union? (the water from the valve to the union will spill out).

I run an OM 2 way for my return. LOVE IT! Dead quite and runs great. After 2 years I had to replace the drum, but that's it. They sent me a new drum free of charge.
