Hi, I just started adding corals and wanted to know what is a good temp. for a reef tank. I have everything set at 79 degrees. Heaters turn on at 78. Using a Ranco controller. Do LPS have a different temp. requirement than say SPS or soft corals?

Thanks in advance!

Vince

I think 79 is pretty good.

mine stays at 79-80 almost constantly, with small swings down to 76-77 and up to 81. My LPS look great as do my sps. Keeping Ca and Alk where they need to be is more important that one or two degrees either way.

I also keep mine at 79 - 80 and all of my LPS are doing great!

from what I've heard acans prefer a temp more close to 76-77

Mine is kept at 80. At 81.1, the chiller kicks on.

Now, try not to throw stones, but...

You can definately keep them cooler, if you want. I have Acans, Blastos, Duncans, and candy canes, along with some softies and others, and ..... well,

I don't let my tank go above 75 degrees.

And its gone as low as 63 degrees (although not on purpose.)

The Acans, Duncans, and candy cane keep on growing, though. (The Blasto is a single head that I haven't been feeding, and thus it hasn't been growing, but it is doing well. Its relatively new.)

Tank temp was gettin close to 83 today.. everything looks good but I'm a little nervous. Days away from switching to LEDS & cooler temps.

I think I've only fed my blasto twice and it's grown 8 or so heads on the sandbed under PC lighting in a biocube.

I run my tanks low in temp. Mine stays around 75 and have had great luck keeping sps and lps for the past few years.

i like temps at 77 to 80. but like alot of things in saltwater; consistency is a big plus.

A little cooler is better for Aussie lps. 77 is where I keep mine.
