I am getting ready to try my first SPS in my tank. Do you need to use carbon in the tank or even phosban or rowa etc.

Thanks!

Neither Carbon (GAC) or Rowa (GFO) for me and my creatures ... I'll run a little Purigen if the water isn't looking super clear....

I run both. Carbon to keep the water clean so the light penetrates better and GFO to keep the phospates low.

I run both using a reactor, GFO and Carbon all purchased from Bulk Reef Supply.

Thank you for your replies! I am getting ready to add my first SPS, and I am being really careful about the water. I just upgraded my sump and skimmer. Water checks out fine. Tank is 1 year old this month. I have ran carbon (from bulk reed supply) in the past, but I keep hearing about phospates from using carbon. I also just picked up some of the Rowa. I did not start using it yet.

Thanks again!

Chemi-pure elite and Purigen for me.

if I am not mistaken, chemipure elite has both carbon and gfo components.

I use Carbon (GAC) and Carbon (carbon source). No need to use GFO anymore :)

by carbon source you mean vokda ?

I tried that method first, but switched to gfo for simplicity.

By Carbon-Source I mean a combination of Vodka, Glucose and Vinegar.

Carbon source dosing can be very simple also, if you follow the basic rules. You can find more info here (http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2008-08/nftt/index.php) if you would like to.

I didn't used to run carbon and never had any problems with my sps, but now I use it to keep the water extra clear.

Run carbon but don't overdue it! A little can go a long way in small aquariums.

I have been using about half the dose and changing more often (about every 2 weeks)

For 600 gallons I run 12" x 18" bed of carbon and a Phosban 550 for GFO. Both medias get changed monthly. Excellant results.
