i just purchased a salifert mag test kit, and tested my mag levels. ive never tested before, so i had no idea on where my mag levels was. all i did was add the gallon of mag, after finishing the brs 2 part gallon.

my levels were 1100. right now i am slowly bringing it up until i reach 1400. i was just curious as to what kinds of effects would mag levels of 1100 have on a sps system. from looking at my tank, there didnt seem to be any noticeable signs of low mag, although i wouldnt know what to look for, lol.

Most hobbyists experience negative effects from low mag. when the level drops down to around 1000 ppm or below. One negative effect I have heard hobbyists experience is reduced coralline alge growth.

FWIW, 1400 ppm is fine, but higher than normal seawater, which is about 1280 ppm.

The other negative effect from low magnesium is excessive precipitation of claicum carbonate on heaters, pumps, etc.
