I would like hear peoples experiences with Algaefix algaecide.

Please no rants about treating the problem, not the cause. I do everything by the book and still have Bryopsis/HA smothering my Monti Caps.

Thanks. Rick

I have tried Algaefix Marine. It does seem to slow down hair algae considerably, but, it won't touch red slime, which of course is not algae at all. Also, I never noticed any ill effects on any of my animals. I really started to beat the hair algae when I replaced the bulb in my UV sterilizer.

If its the purple looking stuff i used it in my first nano,& it did work, but u have to leave the flow off for a while for it to work.I eventually lost that battle,& tore that tank down.7yrs ago.

Thanks for the info.
Algaefix may not be a "natural" solution to an algae problem, but I don't consider jacking up the Mg, adding sugar-vodka-vinegar or shutting off the lights for days natural either.

I have done all the right stuff and the Green Monster is still haunting me. R :mad2:

I used it back on my nano with decent success. Along with tweezers, and mass water changes. I liked it. It didn't harm anything in the tank, and eventually all algae was gone.

I just used it on a massive GHA infestation. It defiantely stopped the growth and weakened it. I was able just to brush the hair away from the rock using a brush.

Great.
And the treatment didn't effect the coral or fish??

Check out this thread http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1595003&highlight=algaefix

The gist of it is that for the most part it is effective and won't bother most corals. I think a few people had some issues, but I would use it if GFO doesn't work for me.

I have some stuff like a hector's goby, hermit and emerald crabs that eat hair algae so I actually want a little of it.

I assume you've gone the GFO route and that didn't fix it.

If its Bryopsis. Why don't you just add magnesium into the tank and get it up to around 1800 for about a week. It will kill it all off and is very effective. It does not hurt corals or fish. I know it sounds weird, but trust me when I say it works and plenty of people do it!

It worked pretty well for me. However, I didn't notice any significant difference until the fourth or fifth dose so be patient, consistent and FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS. I've heard horror stories of people doing too much too fast becasue they get overzealous with it. I didn't notice any problems with my coral or fish either. Good product though. I'd recommend it after you've tried other more "natural" options. Good luck.
