I am possibly going to swap out a 75 for a 90, maybe even go lots bigger.
My concern is if I do, what about my sandbed? It is 3" in a few places, but I would guestimate it to be about 1" if it were still level/flat. The sand is for appearance, but I imagine this has good stuff too since it has been running for close to 5 years now.
The new tank will go in the exact spot the existing one is, so it will be a long day when/if it happens.

Do I get rid of the sand (fine), reuse it, or? Since I'd be switching all livestock over, I need it to be as safe as it can be. Do I rinse the sand or just scoop it and hope for no gas/nitrates, or just go with all new sand?

Thanks!

I've always kept a shallow sand bed. The two times I have upgraded my tank, I have used two or three cups of the old sand (taken from the front where it has been siphoned clean during water changes) and added new sand for the remainder.

you can rinse your sand till you dont have cloudy water coming out anymore and then move it over this is what i did when i moved my 135 gal to my new 240 gal.

Thanks for the replies.
You rinsed it and changed over all in the same day?

That's what I did, rinsed it in old tankwater, put fresh new sand in the new tank, then transfered the old sand over on top of it.

So it would obviously be losing any of the good bacteria. Should I try to save any of the good sand? Maybe several cups full and add it or simply not worth the effort or danger?
