CNC progams

Hi,

I'm looking to see if anyone here can make CNC programs for some acrylic flanges. I've got access to a CNC but no idea how to make the programs to run it.

It's a little harder than "just making programs".

What exactly are you needing?
Have you done the CAD drawings?
What kind of CNC are you talking about?
What tool control software is the "CNC" running?
If you don't know how to make programs to run it how can you actually run the machine?
I can't make ' programs' unless I know what tools are being used and what speed the machine can translate at.

Tiz often much easier to have someone do the task for you.

Guys,
The CNC is at a friends company. He know how to run work it just doesn't know how to make the programs to do the cut I need. All he told me was to bring the programs and the acrylic he could do the rest.

As for what I need. I'm wanting to make some lids to for thumb screws. Like the type on top of Beckett skimmers, if that helps. put the top on twist a little then tighten down the thumb screws.

Honest man, it sounds really easy. And for someone who understands and has run a CNC machine it's not hard. But in fact there are innumerable details that will trip you up. As you create the required G-CODE you have to completely understand the machine it's going to run on.

I suspect your friend is thinking he can just take some G-CODE and type it in making a few changes. Well it could end up being a thousand lines. If he can't CAD up what you want and generate G-CODE for the specific machine and tools he has then he can't really provide you with what YOU need.

It's like he's got a jet and can fly you to your destination but he can't land on your street.

Yes there is a a lot that goes into it :)

You need to design the part using CAD and/or CAM software. The part then needs to be converted into a format that your friends CNC machine can read. The "program" has to take into account the type of machine, its operating paramteres and the tool sizes that it can accomodate or that are available.

I would imagine that your friend is a CNC operater and has no idea what format his machine reads or how the files are created. Somebody in the sales or engineering department at his shop does though. When they bid work, the client has to supply the files in the format that the salesperson or engineer asks for. Once the file is in-house they have a person format it for the specific machine it is to run on.

Is your friend doing this with the knowledge of his boss, or is just going to sneak the work in? If it is with permission, then he needs to ask what type of file format is needed, or ask if the in-house guy what types of files he can convert.

This is certainly a lot of work for 1 ro 2 CNC lids.... your time would be much better spent with a router and drill press :)

Yes the guy is the operator. I don't really know what the arrgenments on how he would get it done.

And i need about 12 tops/flanges maybe more maybe less me and him still need to still figure out what all we are building

CNC is fun to play with, but in the time it will take to work this out and figure out all of the gotchas, you could have hand routed a dozen flanges :)

An hour with a router.... I could have easily made 20 of them in a single day if I had needed them... I only needed one :)

Most/if not all CNC machines have a pre-programmed library of parts, flanges have been in every program library that I've encountered - whoever physically operates the machine would be the best person to ask.

FWIW, I will NEVER, EVER, EVER, EEEEEVVVVVERRR use nylong thumbscres on ANYTHING every again... EVER. They are hard on the fingers, they stretch and deform when tight and then don't turn easily. If I ever do it again, I will use stainless wing nuts or something easier on the fingers.

Funny you should mention this. We are plan was nylon thumb screws and I don't like them. Wouldn't the stainless steel rust out dude to the salt in the air??

By the way get work on that stuff. Might have to look at that link some more. Cause the CNC does not look like it's going to pan out.

Here is code for a 6" top. You will need to tap the 2 holes in the top to 0.50" NPT . Adjust feed and speed if your machine can't achieve 14,500 RPM.
