View Full Version : Torch vs. GSP: who will win?

I have some GSP in my mixed reef tank that is encroaching on my torch.

I realize the main battle here is "stinging ability" vs. "smothering ability", kinda like Samurai vs. Sumo.

Well anyhow, anyone watched this battle and know who wins?

I don't mind the GSP growing a lot, so long as the torch can fend off the GSP.

my money is on the GSP. My torch gets abused in my tank.

BTW, I assume the GSP is the Sumo?

The only thing I have seen harm GSP is:

Dendros & Sun Corals
Elegance Corals
and some Frogspawn

My Torch was loosing the battle to the GSP I had in the tank. That is when I destroyed all of the GSP lol.

Hmm. :hmm3: Well I'll keep this in mind! I was expecting the torch to be able to fend it off.

How did you destroy it?

How did you destroy it?

I pulled the rock out. Grabbed a nice big hunting knife...

And scraped the crap off until it was no more.

Your knife will be dull by the time your done lol, so you might want to do it another way. You obviously wouldn't want to do this with the rock in the tank either.

take the rock out, soak it in a good kalkwasser paste, scrape remains off, pray no more comes back....

GSP will win, imo.

Years ago I had a tank that was taken over by GSP. My tank looked like a prairie with rolling hills of GSP waving in the current.

The only thing that killed my GSP were mushrooms. At least GSP were easy for me to remove via pulling off the leathery purple base from the rock. Mushrooms are such a pain.

Are Purple Star Polups just as deadly as GSP? (sorry to highjack the thread)

All star polyps are aggressive.

I've heard clove polyps grow similar, but they don't have any sting.... so they are easier to control by putting more aggressive corals near where you don't want them to grow.

Also to add. Galaxea with kick the crap out of GSP as well. Then again Galaxea will take out just about everything lol.

So we're finding that the only way to destroy this terrorist is to introduce a bigger terrorist, lol.

Thanks for all the input guys! My tanks are small, so if deforestation is needed, it's not a big deal.:hammer:

So how do you get rid of Mushrooms. I've tried aiptasia x but they come back. Scraping doesn't seem to work either.

If you can isolate the GSP on a single rock, you can enjoy it without having to worry about it spreading onto the rest of your rockwork. If not, it will spread, and you'll eventually have to find ways to deal with it.
